What we consulted on

The St Owen Street cycle contraflow has been considered and consulted on over a number of years. It was outlined in a recent city centre improvements consultation. The design of the scheme has further progressed, taking into consideration safety concerns and reflecting the precedence of King Street cycle contraflow.

An exhibition was available in the lobby at Hereford Library, during normal opening hours throughout the consultation, with staff available at the library to answer questions on Wednesday 2 August and Wednesday 23 August between 2pm and 4pm. We held a public consultation event at the Assembly Hall, Hereford Town Hall on Wednesday 19 July from 12 noon to 7pm.

Outline of scheme

The scheme being consulted on provides a formal cycle contraflow lane for the full length of St Owen Street from Offa Street to its junction with Bath Street. It includes a controlled pedestrian crossing at the junction with Bath Street, together with additional build outs for uncontrolled pedestrian crossings along the length of St Owen Street. Existing parking bays on St Owen Street will be amended from echelon (angled) to parallel.

Scheme objectives

The objectives of the scheme are:

  • To provide a safe cycle route from the east of the city into the city centre
  • To improve the ease and safety for pedestrians crossing St Owen Street
  • To improve the safety of vehicles using parking bays along St Owen Street
